Tânia Carvalho is one of the main references for contemporary dance in Portugal having been in the scene for many years and becoming one of the greatest in the field with shows that have been brought to countries all over the world. She is a multidisciplinary artist that also creates drawings and music playing virtuously the piano for the pieces that she choreographs.
Versa-Vice is the contemporary dance show that Tânia prepared for 2023, involving dancers, lights and a breathtaking soundtrack with her on the piano and also playing an eco-erhu which is an ancient chinese two-stringed bowed instrument that produces eerie sounds.
There are dynamic songs such as “a wish for a vague thing soon“, ones that are profound like “a loosened sense of selves”, and there is also rare beauty in “shadow lunar blent” where she sings with her intense voice a text from the cult portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa. There is also the very minimal techno style “bending, mingling, hiding” where a 4x4 tempo is present and notes are repeated in live loops towards a conceptual dance floor.
Soniclab, which is a subsidiary of Soniculture dedicated to promoting new ideas in music and visual art, is very proud to debut Tânia Carvalho’s first album that is the soundtrack to Versa-Vice, with a cover that is a drawing made by her and that reflects the beauty underlying this release.
